Dear Graduate Students,
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of celebrating many of our students during the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. It was a joyous occasion filled with pride, reflection, and gratitude as we honored the achievements of our graduates. Completing a doctorate represents years of rigorous study, creativity, persistence, and intellectual growth, and we are immensely proud of all who have reached this important milestone.
The celebration also served as a reminder of the extraordinary breadth and strength of our graduate community. Whether pursuing a doctoral degree, a master’s degree, or a graduate certificate, each of you contributes in meaningful ways to the intellectual and creative life of the university and to the broader communities we serve.
This past year has asked a great deal of all of us. Across higher education, we have faced uncertainty, shifting expectations, financial pressures, and growing demands on our time and energy. These challenges have touched our community in different ways and have often required perseverance, adaptability, and patience.
What has stood out throughout this year is the way our graduate community has continued to move forward with purpose and resolve. Even in difficult moments, you have remained committed to your work, to one another, and to the larger values that bring us together as a scholarly community. Those contributions, many of them quiet and unseen, are deeply valued and worthy of recognition and celebration.
None of this happens in isolation. Behind every graduate student's achievement is a network of support that includes faculty mentors, advisors, staff, peers, family members, and friends. I want to express my sincere appreciation to our faculty and staff for the care, mentorship, and guidance you continue to provide. Your commitment to supporting graduate education has made an enormous difference in the lives and success of our students.
As we transition into the summer months, I encourage everyone to take time, whenever possible, to rest and recharge. The pace and pressures of the past year have reminded us how important it is to care for ourselves and for one another. Whether that means spending time with loved ones, reconnecting with hobbies and interests, traveling, or simply allowing yourself space to pause and reflect, I hope you will prioritize your well-being. Please also remember that support resources remain available through the university, including counseling and wellness services for students and employees.
To our graduates, I wish you every success as you begin the next chapter of your personal and professional journeys. We are proud of all you have accomplished, and we hope you will remain connected to our community as alumni and colleagues. Your experiences, insights, and achievements will continue to shape the future of graduate education and research.
We remain committed to supporting our graduate students and faculty throughout the summer and beyond. During challenging times, the strength of our community comes from our willingness to support one another with empathy, generosity, and shared purpose.
Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and perseverance throughout this year. I look forward to all that you will continue to accomplish in the years ahead.
Once again, congratulations, and thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko
Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate College
