Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated Graduate Research Assistant (MS or PhD) to join an interdisciplinary research project focused on high-fidelity, physically immersive simulation for clinical education.
Research Description
This project aims to develop advanced simulation technologies that bridge the gap between virtual training environments and the physical realities of patient care. By integrating Augmented Reality (AR) visualizations with haptic feedback, the research will enable realistic, immersive, and data-driven training experiences for healthcare providers and patient families. The assistant will contribute to the design and implementation of Mixed Reality (MR) systems that visualize virtual patients in real-world settings, respond dynamically to user actions, and support rigorous evaluation in clinical education contexts.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop iOS or visionOS application using Swift language on Xcode as the primary MR development platform
- Implement computer vision–based tracking to capture real-world movement and interaction
- Develop and integrate real-time AR visualizations of virtual patients and clinical scenarios
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and attend biweekly meetings
- Participate in research dissemination, including publications and presentations
Required Qualifications
- Enrollment in a graduate program in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with eligibility to Graduate Research Assistantship.
- Strong development experience with iOS or visionOS apps using Xcode
- Proficiency in Swift and familiarity with AR frameworks (e.g., ARKit, RealityKit)
- Solid programming fundamentals and interest in real-time, interactive systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with computer vision, motion tracking, or sensor-based interaction
- Familiarity with MR, AR, VR, or other forms of immersive simulation systems
- Interest in healthcare, clinical training, or human-centered technology design
- Prior research experience or strong interest in pursuing research
Compensation
25% GRA position with Tuition Waiver for the spring of 2026; will start the project immediately upon acceptance and the appointment will be granted soon no later than February 13, 2026.
Application Procedure
Interested students should submit a CV, brief statement of interest, and (if available) a portfolio or code samples demonstrating relevant development experience, sent to Prof. Inki Kim at inkikim@illinois.edu
