Ultrasound technology plays an important role in seeing noninvasively inside the body. It is often a first line of diagnosis for different diseases. By analyzing blood flow with ultrasound, it can help to predict potential tumors and their location. Tumors often send out signals that increase the supply of blood to their specific area. For an accurate description of the flow rate in an area, multiple flow rates must be scanned and analyzed. The doppler modalities used to analyze blood flow with ultrasound give us information on the speed and density of the blood. By combining this information, we can get a better estimate of flow rate through a vessel. A gelatin flow phantom was used in which blood mimicking fluid was pumped through at rates of 20 ml/min – 50 ml/min. Color doppler was used to image the blood flow on the ultrasound system. Approximately 100 frames were taken for each rate and the data was processed in matlab. Separately, color doppler and power doppler do not show a linear relationship between increasing flow rate and increasing speed or density. However, when the information is combined a linear relationship can be seen with increasing flow rate. By combining the modalities, it gives a better estimation of blood flow rate than using one modality alone. This result is an important prerequisite for analyzing tumors and the amount of blood supply they are receiving.
