Fellowship Opportunities Search Tips
Searching for Fellowships
The Graduate College Fellowship Opportunities is a searchable database with hundreds of fellowships. We list campus fellowships offered exclusively to University of Illinois students, as well as external funding opportunities.
Search Early, Search Often
Category Search
Selecting a category allows you to keep your search broad. Select a category from the list on our home page and take the time to read through the list of resulting fellowships. It may take a little longer to read through the search results, but this search method will allow you to see all fellowships related to a specific category. Keyword searches take less time, but may result in missed opportunities. For example, if you are looking for funding to conduct research in Germany and you enter “Germany” in the search box, you may miss other research fellowships that would be applicable but do not specify Germany in the listing. Instead, select the “Research or Study Abroad” category to find opportunities that may apply to you.
Keyword Search
For a more focused search, enter a word or phrase in the search box, then click the Search Fellowships button. Any fellowship listing that contains that word or phrase will appear in the search results. For example, entering the words “National Science Foundation” in the search box will bring up all fellowship listings offered by this organization. Keep in mind that when entering a phrase, all of the words in that phrase must appear in the listing.
Advanced Search
The advanced search allows you to combine the category and keyword searches. Select one or more categories to search (hold down the CTRL key to select multiple categories), and then enter a word or phrase in the keyword box. The search results will include all listings within the specified category that contain the word or phrase in the title or listing. The Advanced Search also organizes search results by deadline date and allows search results to be emailed to any email address.
