1. What does Departmental Nomination Required mean?
“Department Nomination Required” means that your academic program must nominate you for the fellowship. Oftentimes these fellowships limit the number of nominations that each department may submit. If you are interested in a fellowship that requires department nomination, you must check with your department to find out their nomination requirements. Departments may also have a departmental deadline that materials need to be submitted to them in order to be considered for nomination.
2. What is the difference between a Campus Deadline and the Sponsor’s Deadline?
Many fellowships funded by sources outside the University require that nominations be submitted by the University and do not allow students to apply directly for the award. For this reason, the campus will set an internal campus deadline that allows time for nominations to be reviewed prior to the external sponsor’s posted deadline. The sponsor’s deadline is for the University’s submission of nominations. Students and departments must have nominations into the Graduate College Fellowship Office by the Campus Deadline to be considered for these fellowships.
3. Do transcripts need to be official? Can I submit a photocopy of my transcripts, or do they need to be original?
Transcript requirements vary by fellowship opportunity. Campus fellowship listings will specify if transcripts need to be official or if photocopies are acceptable. For external fellowship opportunities, be sure to read the transcript requirements on the sponsor’s website.

4. How can the Graduate College Fellowship Office assist me in locating a fellowship?
The Graduate College Fellowship Office will be happy to answer questions on any of the Graduate College fellowship programs. You will find our contact information on the listings for these fellowships. For select fellowships, the Graduate College sends information emails to graduate students and programs to alert of upcoming deadlines and other important information.
Given the hundreds of fellowship listings and the unique qualifications of thousands of graduate students, searching the database for opportunities must be the responsibility of the student. While searching the listings can take time, it is time well invested, as the results can provide excellent funding opportunities for your graduate education.
5. Do you have any resources to assist in proposal writing?
There are several good articles, websites, and books that introduce students to the art of proposal writing. Check out
http://www.grad.illinois.edu/fellowships/proposals for a list of our recommendations. Also, the Graduate College offers workshops to help students learn proposal writing techniques. If your unit is interested in one of these workshops, contact Ken Vickery, Director of External Fellowships, at
vickeryk@illinois.edu.
