Ken Vickery, PhD, Director of External Fellowships

Ken Vickery joined the Graduate College in 2009.  As Director of the Office of External Fellowships, he leads efforts to help Illinois graduate students compete for national and international awards.  He coordinates on-campus selection committees for external competitions, conducts proposal writing workshops for graduate students and postdocs, and individually advises graduate students applying for grants and fellowships.  He has helped students win awards from the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Fulbright, German Academic Exchange Service, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Social Science Research Council, and many others.  Vickery earned a B.A. in history with high honors from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh.  Before arriving at Illinois, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at Harvard University.

Colleen Vojak, PhD, Assistant Director of External Fellowships

Colleen Vojak joined the Graduate College’s Office of External Fellowships in 2011.  As Assistant Director, her primary role is to advise students on developing funding proposals to external agencies and foundations.  She also presents workshops on proposal writing, and she helps manage the Fellowship Finder database – a comprehensive listing of fellowships and grants available to graduate students.  Vojak earned her Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and she serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Educational Policy, Organization & Leadership department in the College of Education.  She has an M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Maine and a B.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin.  She has lived and worked in the C-U community for the past 24 years.

Karen Ruhleder, PhD, Assistant Director of External Fellowships

Karen Ruhleder joined the Graduate College in 2014.  As Assistant Director of External Fellowships, she presents proposal writing workshops for graduate students and postdocs in STEM fields and individually advises graduate students applying for grants and fellowships across all disciplines.  She also helps manage the Fellowship Finder database – a nationally recognized listing of funding awards available to graduate students.  Ruhleder earned a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science and a B.A. in German Language and Literature from the University of California at Irvine.  She actively reviews for conferences in computer supported cooperative work, participatory design, and information systems research.
