The Use of Photovoice in Depicting Hip-Hop's Influence on Youth

While studying the impact of hip-hop on youth is crucial, standard procedures that do not include experiential insights to enhance statistical data will not render applicable approaches to deal with this issue effectively. This research explored photovoice as a participatory art activity, where participants' unprocessed inputs on the influence of hip-hop on their lives were central to several original graphic designs created by the investigator. Four African American students of 15 to 25 years old, located in the Urbana-Champaign area, and familiar with hip-hop photographed images in seven days. Though all participants used and turned in disposable cameras and small-sized notebooks, only one person discussed results with the investigator and selected pictures for presentation as an artist's book. Despite limitations, photovoice facilitates the production of significant works of art, plus enriches scholars' understanding of any topic by providing participants' stances.
