Small Cities: An Analysis of Non-Urban Environments in the Neo-Noir Tradition

This research project examines the use of non-urban environments (such as small towns) in the neo-noir tradition. In film noir, urban environments, such as New York, are studied as pivotal elements to the creation of the noir style. With the introduction of neo-noir, a subset of the noir style, an understanding as to the importance of non-urban environments has risen in prominence. The analyses that follow, though, do not describe the shift from an urban environment to a non-urban environment and the possible alterations in setting that have resulted due to the change. I have conducted a close reading of The Naked Kiss to explore the definition of setting created in the neo-noir tradition. I hope to further the understanding of non-urban environments within the neo-noir tradition in order to answer the question how has the shift in locale changed the definition of setting within the film noir tradition?
