Safety and service ability of tall buildings
This study will examine the safety criteria required to provide safe building performance, focusing primarily on fire and structural safety. It almost goes without saying that in addressing a building's performance, one must also evaluate its serviceability factors. However, not all buildings are susceptible to all forces of nature or human deliberate actions. Therefore, it is important to assess a building's risk in order to address the relevant concern. Likewise, a building must perform satisfactorily under the routine service loads so that the structure does not deform excessively or crack if it is a concrete structure. It is the goal of this paper to evaluate the aspects of tall building safety and serviceability by clearly defining them with the aid of multiple building case studies. Ultimately, the final goal is to discuss and discover innovations in building safety that might provide for safer environments as they pertain to tall buildings.
