Mechanistic study of perchlorate reduction
Perchlorate (ClO4-) and chlorate (ClO3-) are significant contaminants that may appear in drinking water. Both of these ions may be reduced to innocuous chloride ion by microorganisms or by chemical reductants. Here a catalytic reduction system that consists of 1:1 Re(VII):Pd on an activated carbon support, hydrogen (reductant), and CO2 (buffer) gases was used for remediation studies. This research focuses on the understanding whether ClO3- is an intermediate in the catalytic reduction of ClO4-. Preliminary analyses show that the reduction of ClO3- is achieved by this system. It is expected that ClO3- is indeed an intermediate in the ClO4-reduction.
