Latinas in the Midwest: An Analysis of Barriers that Impede Participation in Higher Education

Latinas in the Midwest have a low rate of enrollment in higher education. The purpose of this study is to identify the educational barriers that Latinas in the Midwest, mostly in Illinois, encounter that negatively effect their participation in higher education. This analysis focuses on Latinas of all ethnicities in Illinois, ranging from Mexican-American, Puerto Rican American, Cuban-American, and so forth. This research is especially significant due to the scarcity of research in regards to Latina educational experiences in the Midwest. The method of study is content analysis of articles in educational journals, statistical data indicating the number of Latinas participating in higher education, and past literature that has been written about the barriers that Latinas in the Midwest encounter. This research thoroughly examines the academic barriers as well as the cultural barriers that Latinas encounter. Along with academic and cultural barriers come sub-barriers, which also are presented and discussed. This is a preliminary study and will conclude with suggestions for future research.
