Latina Representation in Mainstream Media

Mainstream media is used to portray people of different ethnic backgrounds. This research focuses specifically on the depiction of Latinas in various forms of the media. Society's perception of the Latina is often misconstrued and is based on the stereotype of the sensual, exotic Latina vixen. In order to analyze the extent of Latina portrayal in the media, the following resources were utilized: films (i.e. Mi Familia/My Family), magazines (Cosmopolitan Magazine versus Latina Magazine), the news and television programs. Through the exploration of these devices, Latina representation will be analyzed for extent and the significance of Latina images.
