Juvenile Delinquency in Puerto Rico: A Problem that Concerns Us

This qualitative research examines the problem of juvenile delinquency in Puerto Rico and the actions that the Puerto Rican education system can take to reduce this phenomenon. This research will provide a historiography about juvenile delinquency from the 1970's to the 1980's, with an emphasis on the factors behind juvenile delinquent behavior and the relationship between Puerto Rican school's curriculums and juvenile delinquency. Additionally it will examine to the effectiveness of the existing rehabilitation programs. What actions should the Puerto Rican education system assume in order to reduce juvenile delinquency in Puerto Rico is the principal question of this research. Also examined and analyzed are the following areas: the causes that drive Puerto Rican youth to commit delinquent acts, what schools can do to prevent juvenile delinquency, what ways do schools fail to achieve their students' expectations, and how can rehabilitation programs be improved?
