Jigaboos and Wannabes: A Critical Cultural Analysis of Colorism in Boyz n the hood, Jason's Lyric, and Eve's Bayou
Mass media representations of historically vulnerable populations continue to proliferate Communications, Mass Media Studies and Critical Cultural Studies scholarship. This study analyzes the relationship between African American cinematic productions and an intraracial phenomenon called colorism. Films Boyz N The Hood (1991), Jason's Lyric (1994) and Eve's Bayou (1997) will be critically examined. The researcher will examine how the physical body functions to represent sexual desirability, socio-economic mobility and character pathology. The methodology employed will be a qualitative textual analysis.
