Inequalities in Urban School Districts: A Case Study of Chicago
It is no secret that education is perhaps the most important tool for achieving success in America today. Receiving a proper education is necessity for an individual who aspires to have a prosperous career in a prestigious position with a good salary. Unfortunately, many African Americans are not receiving an education that is up to par with the education received by their White counterparts. This is especially true when discussing African American and White students in the Chicago Public Schools. Some might even go as far to say that Chicago Public Schools are at the bottom of the education ladder just as the Chicago Tribune did with an article in their paper titled, "Chicago Schools: Worst in America." (Chicago Tribune March 1988).The purpose of this study is to find the differences in the education of African Americans and Whites in Chicago Public Schools. What the study shows is that there does indeed exist disparities between African American and White education. The reasons behind the differences in the education received by Whites and African Americans are plentiful and it is the goal of this research to expose them. This study will be done by doing content analysis on writings previously created dealing with this topic, and concludes that the education African Americans receive in Chicago Public Schools is different and worse than the education Whites receive.
