Imagining Cindy Sherman: A Representation of the Themes of Modern American Art

This research project focuses on the American artist Cindy Sherman and her photographic series, Untitled Film Stills. These photographs will be discussed in relation to the four themes of American art focused on by a television program in production entitled, Imagining America: American Art in the 20th Century. The themes include: The American Land, Identity and Reinvention, Language between Nature and Experience, and Art and Society. The background information on general themes in American art will be gathered by surveying art history books written by leading art historians. Specific information on Cindy Sherman will be obtained from retrospectives, articles, and books on her work. Also essential to this research is an outline from the television program that contains the information that will be presented. Through the use of these resources, the question of how Shermans work fits into the greater context of American art will be answered.
