Image is everything: Cultural influences of African American female body image satisfaction

Literature suggests that there are cultural differences among African American women and Caucasian women regarding their body image, and level of satisfaction. According to Fallon (1990), identification with one's cultural group, whether it be native or adopted, is important in the individual's perception of what is ideal. Culture plays a crucial role in the importance individuals place on matching their bodies with an ideal. This study examines whether there are intra-cultural determinants that affect sub-cultural attitudes, and reduce the anxieties within African American body image satisfaction. A descriptive survey will be distributed to University of Illinois students. Analysis will focus on determining which specific intra-cultural determinants have significant influence on attitudes and perceptions regarding body image satisfaction among this group.
