The Identity of Women of Color in Hip Hop

The goal of researching the identity of women of color in hip-hop is to broaden the debate, which often times reflects a one-sided opinionated battle into quantitative and objective data. On the surface many hip-hop music videos glorify scantily dressed women as prostitutes, strippers, and groupies willing to do anything for their hip hop king, pimp or hustler. Generally, the musician takes the heat for the misrepresentations of women in hip-hop while women are also criticized as making inappropriate decisions. However, more effective than playing the blame game, the University of Illinois research team will examine the power behind music videos concerning their purpose, creative process, and effectiveness as advertisements.
