How Can the Muscogee Creek Nation Use Geographic Information Systems to Improve Social and Economic Development.
This research is to review geographic information systems (GIS) mapping with ArcGIS 8.3 and to determine how this mapping can improve social and economic development for the Muscogee Creek Nation. A CD-ROM with usable information relevant to the Muscogee Creek Nation will also be created.
The Muscogee Creek Nation is a tribal government made up of Muscogee Creek people. The headquarters of the Muscogee Creek Nation is located in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The Nation's boundaries contain six countries and portions of five other adjacent countries.
ArcGIS 8.3 is a software program that allows the use of statistical information that has already been collected and arranged for various areas to create useful maps. The finished CD-ROM will include information such as population, race, zip code, where cities and towns are located within a state, census information, and waterways for these areas. This CD-ROM can be used as a tool when creating maps in the ArcGIS map program.
Tribes will be able to use GIS maps to help them determine the number of citizens who would utilized a new economic venture, a new Child Care center, Head Start center, or community center. A good detailed map will be useful in determining potential numbers of employable Muscogee Creek citizens in an area or help tribal police to establish crime rates in an area as well as easily identify jurisdictional boundaries.
The CD-ROM created as part of this research has information about the countries that are within the Muscogee Creek Nation boundary area. This information will serve as a source for mapping. The Muscogee Creek Nation will be able to use any layer of information, such as an individual county, the population there and the zip code or roads that run through it, depending upon what they are looking for. Each layer of information was collected from sources such as state agencies, private companies, or census data. Each layer adds another degree of exactness that tribal leaders will be able to easily access to help with future projects.
