From High School to College: Influences on Transition
Many adolescents, especially minorities, experience a great deal of anxiety as they move from high school to college. The proposed study looks at some of opportunities available to students in the high school years that could influence an optimistic transition. Data was gathered from undergraduate participants in a summer research opportunity program, who reflected on people they consulted and activities they participated in before entering college. Results indicated that though there was a significant effect on participating in college preparatory programs, there was no significant effect on communicating with counselor and participating in extra-curricular activities on reducing college anxiety. These findings are inconsistent with what previous research has shown, and further research should be conducted using a more targeted measure at answering the specific research questions as well as a more diverse sample.
