The Garrison Dam Changes Life Amongst the Three Affiliated Tribes on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota

The research project conducted is a personal story for me the researcher; I am a tribal member of the Three Affiliated Tribes. I feel the need to tell this part of history that is rarely heard. The research involves the Garrison Dam that was built on the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota, on land taken from the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara) by a forced sale agreement in 1948. During the time the Garrison Dam was constructed between 1948 to1953; the tribe suffered many hardships. The research focuses on the research question which is; After the building of the Garrison Dam on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota, how has the Three Affiliated Tribes' (Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation's) economy, resources and community been affected? After formulating the research question the methods I used were primary government documentation and secondary documentation, a documentary and an interview with an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes. Included within my findings I discuss briefly the differences in the Three Affiliated Tribes' economy, resource and community before and after the forced sale of land. Other aspects within my findings include the Garrison Dam and how it was apart of the Pick-Sloan plan, and then a discussion on how this event affected the members of the tribe and my family.
