Gabriel García Márquez's "Cien anos de soledad": The Irrationality of Love and How it Exists within a Rational World (Spanish Text)

The purpose of this study is to understand how Gabriel García Márquez discloses the consequences of love in "Cien años de soledad." By studying the works of García Márquez up to and including "Cien años de soledad," critical analysis, biographies, and interviews, I have concluded that love leads to chaos in this novel. García Márquezs use of certain literary techniques and the experimentation with other techniques in "Cien años de soledad" help to create a chaotic environment brought on by the uncontrollable force of love. More specifically, I will focus on the ways in which he abolishes lineal time, blurs the lines of reality and fantasy, and combines the worlds of the living with that of the dead. These techniques are used to extend the irrationality of love to the entire fictional world of the novel, in turn demonstrating the ways in which love does not conform to any rules, does not sit within any boundaries, and therefore can cause chaos in the lives of those who seek love at any cost.
