The Effects of Skin Tone on an Individual

Researchers working from a mainstream perspective have explored the relationship of skin color and life chances as a Black and White issue. However, this study will seek to investigate perceptions and impact of skin color on life chances within ethnic groups. In short, this is a study of color and its effects as opposed to a study of race. I will examine the ways in which skin color affects an individuals life chances. More specifically, explore the following issues (1) health care, (2) occupational opportunities (3) housing, and (4) consumerism. The four significant issues are explored because skin color influences an individual's life chances.

A questionnaire, which includes 15 closed-ended and one open-ended question, will be distributed to 30 SROP participants. The data collected from the questionnaire will be analyzed to identify similarities and differences among the responses and furthermore, discern any patterns that arise. Finally, these findings will be placed in the context of the existing literature and movies related to skin tone and life chances. This study will have profound implications as it seeks to raise awareness of the fact that skin color discrimination indeed exists, and that it is also a predictor of an individual's life chances.
