Effects of Genistein on Inflammatory Markers in Adipose Tissue

Obesity is now considered to be a chronic low-grade inflammatory state that is accompanied by excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and extensive infiltration of macrophages. Genistein, a soy isoflavone, has anti-inflammatory effects similar to those seen with 17?- estradiol. We hypothesized that a short exposure to genistein in wild-type mice would cause a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines and consequently a reduction in adipose mass. Male and female juvenile wild-type mice were divided into two groups: control and experimental. The experimental group was fed a supplemented diet containing genistein 1000 ppm for 14 days, while control mice were fed a genistein-free diet. Parametrial and epididymal fat pads were weighed and mRNA expression for the pro-inflammatory markers IL-6 and TNF-? was quantified. Genistein did not decrease adipose mass and mRNA expression for IL-6 and TNF-?. These results indicate that short term administration of genistein do not have an effect on inflammatory markers in adipose tissue.
