Economic Integration and Growth in ASEAN-3

Since the end of the Cold War, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries have experienced sustained growth at rates as high as any other region in the World. What has led to the sustained growth in Southeast Asia? Many have pointed to ASEAN's successful export oriented strategies as the reason behind this phenomenal growth. A second explanation that is often put forward is the influx of foreign direct investment (FDI), specifically Japanese FDI, into the region. Curiously, while the countries have been rapidly growing, integration in the region appears to be stagnant. This paper uses the Granger causality test to attempt to clearly define the relationship between the Japanese FDI, growth, and regional integration in the region.
