Designing Rams to enhance public access of homes in Solar Decathlon Competition
This research focuses on understanding code requirements and functionality in the design of ramps for the 2009 Solar Decathlon. In addition to providing equal access to people with and without disabilities a ramp can enhance the experience of visiting a house that will be viewed by hundreds of people while on display to the public in Washington DC. Using 2007 Solar Decathlon construction drawings, photos and codes that were used in the competition I have investigated which methods are most efficient to create an effective ramp. As the result of comparing and analyzing all of the 2007 SD 20 homes, my design solution provides safe and secure access at the same time providing an esthetic in keeping with the design and the same, and a sequential experience to for all who will visit the 2009 UIUC Solar House.
