Capitalism and African America Popular Culture: The Lack of Health Information in African American Popular Culture Literature
The decline in health status of African American youth is evidenced by increasing mortality and morbidity rates for various diseases such as diabetes, and increased prevalence of violence and teenage pregnancies. Many of these conditions are preventable, suggesting that these youth are either not receiving any or adequate health information. Research shows that the internet is a popular source among the youth to gather health information, but African American youth are twice as likely not to have access to a computer and internet resources. As a result, I focused on three popular print media sources—Vibe, Jet, and Sports Illustrated—to quantify the level of health information in each source, as well as analyzing the quality of the articles/advertisements.
