Brown by Choice and Policy: 1st Generation Mexican Immigrants in Higher Education

This study will review and focus on how selective admission policies in the post Affirmative Action era have impacted first generation Mexican immigrant students. First, I will be looking at the harsh realities first generation Mexican immigrants students face when first applying to College. Second, I will be looking specifically at Proposition 209, Hopwood, and the 10 percent solution first started in Texas then being adopted by the State of California as a response to the Hopwood case. Finally, I will be looking at 1st generation Mexican immigrant presence on campuses, and the pressures that they face from home. After providing a quick snapshot of what's happening in California following Proposition 209. Initial findings indicate that these students are dealing with racism at UC campuses and for this reason this study will utilize a critical interpretive methodological framework based on the some of their perspectives from critical race theory and LatCrit to analyze the impact of these anti-affirmative action policies on them.
