The Biases of the Section 8 tenant based Program

This research study addresses the issue of the biases of the Section 8 program. It examines the preconceived notions; perceptions and experiences of Section 8 landlords that cause certain stereotypes that are placed upon Section 8 recipients and how it affects their attitude towards renting to Section 8 recipients. This research also reports Section 8 tenants' experiences and feelings toward the biased perceptions placed upon them. I hypothesize that there are property owners that judge all Section 8 recipients as irresponsible because of past experiences, and that these biases placed upon Section 8 recipients affect them and make it difficult for them to find adequate housing outside of concentrated areas. Additionally landlords who rent to Section 8 recipients feel that it is justifiable to charge them premiums. This research is significant because there is not a lot of information or literature out there concerning the issue about the biases of the Section 8 program. Giving a voice to the sometimes voiceless and powerless is beneficial and by getting this information out there and making people aware that this issue is of major concern will allow others to start to think differently about their biases and realize that not all Section 8 recipients are the same.
