Architectural Steel: A New Trend in Modern Design
This paper addresses the use of architectural steel, commonly referred to as Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS), in design and construction of buildings. While AESS is gaining popularity in the industry, its application presents certain challenges and issues that the designer, fabricator, structural engineer, and contractor needs to be aware of. This paper discusses concerns such as fireproofing, contract specifications, construction processes and higher cost associated with the use of AESS. Case studies will serve as examples of how AESS is being used in buildings today.
