An Africana Feminist Perspective on HIV Prevention Policies in Southern Africa

An Africana Feminist framework will be used to analyze the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) intervention policies within the sub-Saharan region of Africa. The relationship between women's lack of power in negotiating sexual relationships and transmission of HIV throughout varies countries including: Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe will be analyzed. Although the government has implemented educational campaigns to prevent the spread of HIV, there may be cultural norms, such as traditional gender roles, that may contribute to the continued high rate of HIV among women in sub-Saharan Africa.
