African American Culture and Educational Achievement: An Assessment of the Historical Scholarship
The purpose of this study is to attempt an accurate assessment of the role of culture and educational achievement. Textual analysis of relevant academic literature was the best way to access the academic discourse regarding culture's role in academic achievement and searching for an accurate assessment of how culture plays a part in the success or failure of African American students. Furthermore, published academic works play an important role in shaping public policy and ideas of academic achievement as well as culture; therefore it was important to examine what was written on those subjects. This was done in order to investigate what is an accurate assessment of the role of culture in education with regards to the achievement gap. My research concludes by arguing that African American culture is not to blame for an achievement gap among many African American students and their white counterparts in education.
