A Tale of Two Perspectives - Representing and Misrepresenting the Dominican Republic in Selected Magazines
With the Dominican Republic as the fourth largest source of immigrants to the United States during the last decade, United States magazines are increasingly showing an interest in the people and their country. This study examines the representation and misrepresentation of the Dominican Republic in three selected contemporary magazines from the United States and three magazines from the Dominican Republic. This research began with four hypotheses: (1) The major topics portrayed in the U.S. magazines will be sports and vacationing; (2) The U.S. magazines will represent the Dominican Republic with unflattering content in all articles except those in the sports category; (3) The Dominican magazines will carry articles containing predominantly light skin upper class Dominicans; (4) The Dominican magazines will contain more articles with flattering content. By focusing on these four hypotheses, this study will shed light on how the Dominican Republic has been misrepresented in both countries.
