A Study of Choral Conducting and Literature Interpretation with Particular Emphasis on Selected African American Conductors and Arrangers of the Twentieth Century.
The African American Spiritual is the folk music of the black heritage in the United States. It is a very key part in the history of the African American and must never be forgotten. The "Negro Spiritual" played an important role in carrying the slaves of the early nineteenth century through a very toilsome journey, unjust labor, and racial prejudice. In the twentieth century the spiritual saw many great arrangers. Part of this research is a look at a few of these arrangers, their woks, philosophies, and biographies. In order to guarantee a successful performance of any type of choral music, there are certain factors that must be taken into consideration. The question of this research is, "What methodologies and techniques must a choral conductor employ in order to accomplish a successful performance of an African American spiritual?" Is there indeed a difference in teaching different forms of music?
